Warrior Scholars,
Congrats on successfully completing the fist week and a half of your ninth grade year. I don't know you all that well yet, but I already know we will have a great year. Thanks for your participation, humor, and willingness to do well!
Below you will find a review session and updates for what we went over this week. The updates are broken down by learning objectives, do nows, homework assignments, and a section on Bloom's taxonomy to help you review!
-Ms. Parra
Learning Objective:
1. This week our study of focus will deal with the effects of media in our lives.
2. We will accomplish this by reading the Kaiser Family Foundation's study "Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8-to-18 year olds" (2010).
3. We will track how many hours we use media during the course of a week. We will gather personal evidence and synthesize the information in our records and the information found in the study to reach a conclusion.
Do Nows for the week:
8/21 Do Now: Technology, p 1 (R )
Are our lives better or worse with technology? What are the benefits and drawbacks of technology? Provide evidence from your personal life to support your response.
8/22 Do now: Posing Questions p 1 (R )
1. Look at the advertisement and write as many questions that relate back to the image you are seeing.
2. Sort your questions from least complex to most complex (lower level questions to higher order questions)
Homework:
1. Read pages 1-14 and annotate the study:
"Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8-to-18 year olds" (2010). "Come to class ready to discuss!
2. Complete your Media Tracker.
3. Due Monday 8/24.
Homework Questions:
How do I take notes when I read? When you are reading the study, I want you to jot down connections you make with the information (aha moments! or text-to-self connections), pose questions (what do you still want to know?), define vocabulary (circle words and later define), highlight key details (facts, dates, names), and write reminders for yourself in the margins. You want to make it easier on yourself to find crucial information later. My goal with this activity is to get you to "talk" with the text and make connections.

Bloom's Taxonomy Level 1 &2 Questions REVIEW:
Introduction of Knowledge: Basement Level
*We call Bloom's level 1 and 2 questions the basement because they provide us with the basic foundation we need to gather information. Without a foundation, we can't really process or analyze the material! We all require these types of questions at different times and it helps monitor our reading comprehension and basic understanding.
Level 1: Remembering
These questions ask you to recall, memorize, identify, and locate information. These type of questions often look like this:
1. Who is Ms. Parra?
2. When was she born?
3. Where was she born?
4. What subject does she teach?
5. When did she start teaching?
Level 2: Understanding
These questions ask you to take the information and show that you understood it by explaining or summarizing it. These type of questions often look like this:
1. Compare and contrast Ms. Parra and Professor Snape.
2. Summarize the study ""Generation M2: Media in the Lives of 8-to-18 year olds" (2010). "
3. What facts or ideas show that media is negatively affecting our lives?
*Make note of the evolution of the questions as we go through different levels. Next week we will start getting into more complex questions and then….SOCRATIC SEMINARS!
Have a wonderful weekend!
